Finidi George returns to NPFL, after Super Eagles failure

Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George is set for a return to the Nigerian Premier Football League, NPFL, as the new manager of Rivers United.

The Rivers-born tactician is expected to be unveiled as the new boss of his home state club this Thursday, according to a post by Trendy Faith, the media officer of Rivers Angels.

Finidi, 53, left his role as Nigeria’s coach just a month after being appointed, following a disastrous start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The ex-winger’s two official matches in charge of the Super Eagles ended in a draw against South Africa and a shock defeat to Benin Republic, leaving Nigeria’s World Cup dreams in tatters.

Finidi had taken over as Nigeria’s boss in May, replacing Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, but his tenure was cut short by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)’s decision to search for a foreign manager to take over as technical adviser.

Now, it seems the former Ajax and Real Betis star is set for a return to the domestic scene, with Rivers United poised to unveil him as their new head coach

Finidi previously had a successful three-year spell as manager of dethroned NPFL champions Enyimba before taking up the national team job.
