Barely 24 Hours After Saraki’s Reaction to Rising Insecurity, Oke Ode Community in Kwara State Records Massacre
Barely 24 hours after former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in Kwara State of neglecting its constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property, armed bandits invaded Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, killing no fewer than 15 vigilantes and hunters.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, also left several residents kidnapped, plunging the community into mourning.
The development came shortly after Saraki, at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) State Congress in Ajase-Ipo, lamented the rising wave of insecurity across Kwara.
“Our state is being overrun by bandits, kidnappers, and killers who have waged a ceaseless, needless, and careless onslaught on our people. Yet, the government in Kwara State and those in charge have maintained a posture of apathy, nonchalance, and carefree attitude,” Saraki said.
The PDP leader further cited statistics of violence in the state, claiming that about 70 people had been killed in Kwara North and South, 50 others injured, 42 kidnapped, and more than 25 communities deserted in recent months.
Quoting Section 14 (2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which places security and welfare of citizens as the primary duty of the government, Saraki accused the administration of “living in denial” and attempted to suppress facts instead of addressing the crisis.
He stressed that no responsible citizen or political platform should play politics with the safety of lives and property, adding that the PDP would continue to speak out against worsening insecurity in the state.
