BREAKING: Nigerian Air Force Personnel Remain Detained in Burkina Faso

Six days after a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft made a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the 11 Nigerian military personnel on board remain in detention as diplomatic engagements continue to secure their release.
Burkina Faso’s military-led government has alleged that the aircraft entered its airspace without prior authorization. In response, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the crew members are safe and being treated humanely while discussions are ongoing between both countries.
The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Ouagadougou, has initiated diplomatic talks with Burkina Faso to facilitate the release of the detained personnel and the return of the aircraft. As of the time of filing this report, neither government has issued an official statement confirming their release.
The incident has generated public debate within Nigeria, with some commentators urging stronger measures should diplomatic efforts fail. However, authorities have reiterated their commitment to resolving the matter through diplomatic channels, in line with ECOWAS frameworks and international aviation and diplomatic laws.
Meanwhile, regional bodies, including the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), have criticised the alleged airspace violation, noting that Burkina Faso’s air defence systems remain on heightened alert to prevent similar incidents.
The situation remains unresolved, with Nigeria maintaining a measured but firm diplomatic posture, emphasising the safety of its personnel and adherence to established international protocols..
