Businessman Decries Rising Terrorist Activities, Alleges Political Complicity, Expresses Uncertainty About Ending Insurgency in Nigeria

A Zamfara-born businessman has raised fresh concerns over the escalating activities of terrorist groups in the North-West, warning that insurgency in Nigeria continues to grow amid what he described as government inaction and political interference.

Speaking exclusively in Abuja yesterday, the businessman who requested anonymity for security reasons said terrorist groups have expanded rapidly across rural communities, making life increasingly unbearable for residents.

According to him, terrorism in the region “has turned into a lucrative enterprise” and, for many youths, an escape route from poverty and insecurity. He recounted experiences from his time in his village, claiming that armed gangs regularly approached residents with threats to coerce them into joining their ranks.

He alleged that refusal to join often resulted in the loss of property including livestock and farm produce and, in some cases, threats to life. “Many of the young men involved are not members by choice,” he said. “They are forced in through intimidation and severe maltreatment.”

The businessman faulted governments at all levels for failing to take decisive action, accusing political leaders of prioritizing political interests over the safety and wellbeing of citizens. He also claimed that many of the terrorists are known within their communities and that some of their hideouts are “not difficult to identify,” but argued that political dynamics have hindered effective response.

His comments come amid circulating reports on social media including a story published by Sahara Reporters alleging that armed individuals dressed in military uniforms attended the wedding fatiha of a suspected terrorist kingpin in Zamfara State. While independent verification of those claims remains limited, the reports have intensified public anxiety regarding Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.

Security agencies have not yet issued an official statement responding to these allegations
