FG Condemns Ongoing ASUU Strike, Orders Enforcement of ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy
The Federal Ministry of Education has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the ongoing industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing it as regrettable and unnecessary in view of the government’s continuous calls for dialogue.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving all outstanding issues in the tertiary education sector through “constructive and sustained engagement,” rather than prolonged strikes that disrupt academic activities and affect students.
“The Federal Ministry of Education views with dissatisfaction the report of the ongoing industrial action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities despite repeated calls for the union to embrace constructive dialogue as the most effective and sustainable path towards resolving all outstanding issues,” the statement read.
Citing the provisions of the Nigerian labour laws, the ministry reiterated the Federal Government’s stance on the enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy, insisting that employees who fail to perform their official duties during the strike period would not be entitled to salaries.
“In line with extant labour laws, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of ‘No Work, No Pay’ in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her duties during the period of strike action,” the statement added.
Consequently, all Vice-Chancellors of federal universities have been directed to ensure the strict implementation of the policy in their respective institutions.
The ministry further urged ASUU to return to the negotiation table, emphasizing that industrial harmony remains critical to advancing the quality and stability of higher education in Nigeria.
“The Federal Government remains open to meaningful dialogue that will ensure lasting peace and progress in the nation’s university system,” the statement concluded.
