The White House confirmed on Monday that U.S. President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to attend the official draw for the FIFA World Cup finals in Washington later this week.

The event marks a significant step toward the 2026 tournament, which the United States is co-hosting alongside Canada and Mexico

President Trump has positioned the World Cup as a centerpiece event of his second term and a highlight of the upcoming 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

However, the major international sporting event is already facing political headwinds due to the President’s controversial hardline policies.

The Republican President has publicly raised the possibility of relocating games from certain U.S. host cities.

This stance comes amid his administration’s heightened focus on cracking down on what he describes as crime and illegal migration, particularly in areas governed by the Democratic party.

President Trump was recently photographed speaking during a bilateral meeting at the Trump Turnberry Golf Courses in Turnberry, Scotland, on July 28, 2025.

His attendance at the FIFA draw will likely draw international scrutiny regarding the nexus of global sports and current U.S. political divisions.
