Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Pardons 117 Prison Inmates In Independence Day Gesture
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted freedom to 117 prison inmates as part of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.
This move was announced by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to Ebenezer Adeniyan, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision was based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
This pardon comes as Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence, with President Bola Tinubu urging citizens to reflect on past mistakes to achieve future greatness.
According to Adeniyan, the beneficiaries include 19 convicts who will be released outright, and others who will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
He also disclosed that many inmates will see their sentences reduced.
The governor’s aide said, “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions are in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“The council’s discussions considered insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders, focusing on the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.
